What does a January Reset mean to me?

January Reset
January Reset

I was asked to consider this question so I really had a good think about what it actually means and not just what Instagram is telling me to do now that it is a new year.

While we all know the benefits of a reset and you can read my take on the power of organising for wellbeing here, I do love a January Reset taking down the Christmas decorations, getting that space back and starting afresh but even I go easy on myself in terms of what projects I will tackle.

I have mentioned this before but the St Stephens Day ads from years ago stuck with me all through my late teens and early 20’s. The focus on guilt for enjoying good food, alcohol, late nights and just overall overindulgence over the festive period was a very quick slap in the face as I continued my sloth era on the couch. I think brands got wise to this and we stopped hearing about the 2 bowls of cereal diet and focus was more on balance and not full restriction. Anyway, my very long-winded point is that over the past number of years social media has also started to guilt people about their homes and how perfect they should be otherwise you’re failing at life.

So, what I want to promote is my version of a January Reset and what it means to me. It’s about the little wins and setting the bar low for January. A Reset Lite if you will.

Total Home Reset versus January Reset Lite

Clearing the kitchen counter tops of clutter VERSUS a full kitchen reset

Declutter hats and scarves VERSUS a full wardrobe reset

Do a recycle run for batteries, cardboard, old electrics VERSUS Fill a skip of junk from the shed

We don’t need Kardashian style pantries or huge walk-in wardrobes rammed with the latest fast fashion trends. The focus for January should be on having a place for things and putting things back in their place.

If you want to hibernate this January and enjoy the slowness and calm of less parties, less entertaining, less human interaction then I say embrace that. Slowly emerge back into society when you are ready! There is no pressure to reset now doing everything at our own pace is the key.

On the other hand, IF you do have the energy and mindset to tackle those bigger projects go for it, I have lots of handy blogs to help you with whatever space you are focusing on.
