Benefits of Decluttering
Benefits of Decluttering

I wanted to do a quick blog covering the topic of my panel discussion at The Ideal Home Show UK. ‘The Power of Organising for Wellbeing’.

I regularly meet clients that are feeling overwhelmed, stressed, anxious, unmotivated in their spaces. Studies show that cluttered spaces can increase our cortisol levels, so I wanted to share some of the tips I presented at The Ideal Home Show in London on how an organised home can support our wellbeing.

Reduce stress and anxiety – Visual chaos on counter tops, flat surfaces etc creates visual clutter. Organised spaces help calm the mind, and in turn reduces stress. Spend time considering what items are ending up being dumped on these surfaces and identify what doesn’t have a home.

Improve sleep quality – having a calm clutter free bedroom can promote better rest. When your bedroom is calm and free of clutter you can wind down and relax in the space. Creating healthy habits is so important in our bedrooms. Hanging up clothes, putting laundry away avoiding dumping onto chairs or the floor. Spending that 5/10 minutes in the morning or before bed to stay on top of clutter in our bedrooms. I sometimes advise clients to remove chairs/stools from their bedrooms so that there isn’t an option to dump the clothes on – they have to go back into wardrobes or drawers.

Save time – clutter free spaces are easier to clean and find things – no more frantic searches for keys, phones, chargers – everything has a home so you can easily find and put back. This allows you to spend the time on the things that you enjoy and that bring you joy!! Having an organised home is self care!

Boost focus and productivity – Clutter and mess are stress and distractions in our brains. Even subconsciously without us knowing it our brains are focused on the tidy up that needs to be done. By prioritising my top rule of Put back, not down it will avoid clutter accumulating on surfaces and allow our focus to be on the more important aspects of our lives.

Just to wrap up we don’t need to strive for perfection but focus on creating spaces that supports your wellbeing and instils calm.
