The Spring Reset

I don’t know about you but this weather we’ve experienced since January 1st has meant I’ve had very little interest in sorting my home. The constant heavy rain means the house is always full of wet footprints and honestly, even for me, it felt like why even bother.

But the past few days we’ve seen a few blue skies, albeit, only briefly and I have gotten the gra (love!) to go again and get my house fully sorted this Spring.

The weather and my lack of motivation the past couple of weeks have reminded me how much having clear clutter free spaces really impacts your mind too and so I thought I’d blog about it for this month’s newsletter; The Spring Reset; Decluttering Your Home and Your Head.

In Spring weather, usually starts to improve, flowers start to bloom and we begin to spend more time outside. Its generally brighter and so we start to see our homes in literally a new light. This naturally gives us more energy and spark to tackle some of those spaces that have been hanging over our heads.

Being met with visual clutter in our spaces impacts our minds, the mental load is heavier. We can experience decision fatigue; this is a real issue when decluttering large overwhelming spaces and the reason why we sometimes cannot finish the task. I will offer some suggestions later as to how we can deal with this potential issue when decluttering. Overwhelm and stress are words we are hearing more and more and living in cluttered homes is just adding to those feelings. Hopefully I can give you some tips and practical strategies to work through spaces in your home which will help reset your home and your head.

We are not striving for perfection or Instagram homes, we want real homes with systems that work and can be maintained giving us a peaceful and calm environment to live in.

Where to start….

Start with the area causing you the most stress. We want to let the light back into those spaces. Ask yourself what do I want this space to feel like and have your goal in mind. For me my hallway, kitchen, kids bedrooms and playrooms are usually the ones needing the most attention. They are the busiest spaces in the home and need systems to work more effectively.

This is not a get rid of everything you can see exercise. We want a focused reset where we can make good decisions. Use my initial decluttering questions:

  • Do I love it?

  • Do I need it?

  • Where will it live?

The main goal is to have a place for everything, and putting everything in its place.

Picking a small space initially and building from there is my top advice.

What is a system?

I talk about organised systems all of the time with my clients. Really what I mean is just having a place for everything. But most importantly a place that makes sense and reduces the daily stress of things landing on flat surfaces or cluttering up hallways. The key is generally that things are visible and accessible. If it’s stored in a box, within a basket and then in a bigger box, not only will you forget that it is there, on the off chance that you remember it is highly unlikely you’ll ever return it to that space. So, all you have done is create a clutter hot spot for your future self.

I am thinking open baskets, stackable clear boxes, whatever makes the most use of the space but again is easy to use. Storage must be fit for purpose and optimising the space it is being used in. Measuring pre purchase is the golden rule.

My 5 step reset ritual

1.     Empty

2.     Categorise

3.     Declutter (use my key questions above)

4.     Reset (put those systems in place)

5.     Maintain (my golden rules below)

The all important maintenance

  • One in, one out

  • Put back not down

  • Love it, let it go (mini seasonal resets)

  • Weekly 10 minute reset (set a timer)

I hope that has given you some motivation to focus on those cluttered spaces in your home and to implement simple systems that work for you and your lifestyle.
