Whilst I advocate for resetting your home at all times of the year there is a reason why at every season change, we naturally feel ourselves drawn towards a reset. The warmth of the summer months is giving way to cooler, crisper weather, we are thinking about the cozy months ahead and how we need to reset our environment to be prepared.
As September starts our routines are changing. Kids return to school and extra-curricular activities and this can be a transformational shift in the day to day lives of us and our families. We now need to consider shared calendars, lunchboxes, homework, sports, school drop offs. A change in weather, routine and our innate need to spend the darker months hibernating there is no better time to look at resetting your space.
Autumn symbolises change and new beginnings, so mentally we are ready to reset and refresh at home, helping us to feel in control and ready for the busy months ahead.
Rather than getting overwhelmed let’s kick off The September Reset with my Top 5 tips to get your home ready for Autumn.
1) Seasonal Rotation; September is the perfect time to reassess your wardrobe and pack away your summer and holiday clothes in time for the cooler season ahead. Use this time as an opportunity to decide what you still love, need and use and what needs a repair, what you are ready to donate or give to friends or if there are items that you wish to sell. Ask yourself the key declutter questions:
a. Do I love it?
b. Do I need it?
c. Do I have space for it?
2) Back to school routines; if your family are anything like mine the kids are fully back to all of their activities every night of the week so it is important to get on top of the routine a family calendar is crucial to keep track of everything. You can also check out my Back to School blog for more details on my homework and lunchbox stations.
3) Hallway reset, first impressions count even for you coming back into your own home. Are you met with messy spaces? Falling over shoes and school bags? Do you have a drop zone? Have a designated spot for all of these items. Whether it is a piece of furniture with storage or a basket, having a simple solution for the whole family to store these items will help keep your entranceway looking organised.
4) Pantry and food storage refresh. Back to school and routines means a need to be more organised for meal times. Refreshing the pantry to get a good system in there and remove any food past its sell by is step 1. Also consider implementing a ‘Use me Next’ box, I find this so good for meal planning to ensure I use up items that are coming close to going off and reduce food waste. Having organised systems will also ensure you waste less food. Meal planning and making shopping lists keeps us on track and avoid waste. You can use your smart speaker to make a running shopping list which then can be emailed to you on shopping day.
5) Digital and Paperwork declutter, people DREAD focusing on paperwork but if you find that paperwork is landing and building up as clutter on flat surfaces, islands, sideboards, console tables or inside ‘junk drawers’ then it is important to put a system in place to deal with the paper. Try to go paperless as much as possible most bills are online and there is no necessity to keep them. Where there are receipts and important paperwork to be kept implement a filing system that is straightforward and easy to follow and that way you will stick to it. Put back not down is the motto to live by.
I hope you find these tips helpful to get routines back on track and ready for Autumn.
